Surgical Coordinator Duties and Responsibilities

In order to successfully coordinate surgeries, a Surgical Coordinator performs many different tasks. We analyzed job listings for Surgical Coordinators in order to identify these core duties and responsibilities.

Maintain Inventory Surgical Coordinators help ensure adequate preparation for surgery. They help prepare the facility by ensuring that necessary equipment is scheduled and in the correct room and by continually maintaining surgical inventory. They also help prepare the patient for surgery and answer questions or address concerns beforehand.

Manage Surgery Schedule The Surgical Coordinator schedules all patient appointments and surgeries. They also administer appointment reminders to patients. This requires them to understand scheduling procedures for surgeries, such as how long a surgery will take and how much time to allot for set-up and turnaround, and to administer surgery schedules to appropriate medical staff.

Perform Additional Administrative Tasks Other administrative tasks vary depending on the size and scope of the employer, but typically the Surgical Coordinator will manage incoming and outgoing phone calls and emails and often they will assist with management of the front desk as well. Enter Data and Complete Paperwork In order to complete the administrative tasks related to surgery, the Surgical Coordinators manage all surgical documents, gather and input patient information, and enter all post-surgery data.
