Nutritionist / Diabetes Educator & Grant Program Director
Started by coming to the reservation weekly to teach GED classes; heard about the clinic position, applied and was hired. Faced numerous challenges including being a "white" person on the reservation and the perception of taking a job away from a tribe member; quickly overcame barriers, proved dedication to the tribe, and was totally accepted by earning trust and adapting to the culture. Worked under the special diabetes program for Indians, a specially funded program to educate and improve their situation on nutrition and health for all ages. Served as the sole nutritionist serving a population of 800. Worked in concert with agencies (Wellness Center, Social Services office, college, Head Start, and WIC).
- Pioneered a unique plate to use in training for nutrition / diabetics that utilizes the four directions, the four seasons, and other heritage concepts while teach proper portion control in a creative manner.
- Voted Community Wellness Champion shortly after starting the position.
- One of very few groups selected to obtain a highly prestigious $500,000 5-year grant from the CDC by writing and presenting an unprecedented, creative, and highly effective grant proposal outlining programs that would take the tribe back to traditional ways of life.
