Office Manager Duties and Responsibilities

While an officer manager’s day-to-day duties are determined by their employer, there are many core tasks associated with the role. Based on listings we analyzed, these duties are common:

Oversee Office Budgets Office managers ensure financial objectives are met by preparing annual budgets, planning expenditures, analyzing variances, and carrying out any necessary corrections.

Manage Facilities An important part of the office manager’s role is general facility upkeep. They routinely check the building for safety and security, checking doors and ensuring devices such as cameras and monitors are functioning properly. They may fix simple problems themselves, but contact the appropriate technicians to resolve more complex issues.


Office Manager Skills and Qualifications

Office managers have a passion for helping others. They’re energetic, detail oriented, and experienced with directing and supervising others. Employers prefer candidates who possess the following abilities:

  • Communication skills – running a facility requires interacting and working cohesively with a large support staff team. Officer managers must be strong, detailed communicators, especially when handling conflict. Strong written communication skills are also important in this role, especially when drafting process changes and office policies
  • Attention to detail – many of the administrative tasks assigned to office managers require a high level of detail and organization; they must also be comfortable multitasking even while closely monitoring small details
  • Adaptability – office managers are a central member of several teams and so must be flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working in a matrixed environment
  • Problem-solving skills – it’s the office manager’s job to resolve workplace problems, so they should be able to research, escalate, and resolve matters effectively

Office Manager Education and Training

An associate’s degree is usually required for office managers. Bachelor’s degrees are preferred by some employers but are not always required. Previous experience working as an office manager or in a similar position is also preferred by most employers.Hands-on training, especially for the specific processes and software used by the hiring company, is almost always offered by employers.


Office Manager Salary and Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), administrative service managers earn a median annual salary of $94,020. The BLS projects employment of these managers to grow 10 percent by 2026, which is faster than the average for all occupations.
