Electronic Sales Associate Duties and Responsibilities

Electronic sales associates’ responsibilities can differ slightly between various retail stores, but based on postings that we examined, this position has several core duties:

Sell Electronic Devices

Electronic sales associates help customers choose electronic equipment and devices, such as mobile phones, televisions, game consoles, and computers. They may work in a specialty electronics store, or within the electronics department of a larger retail store. They process payments and accept cash, making change and applying coupons or promotions.

Answer Customer Questions

Because they specialize in selling electronic devices, electronic sales associates also spend a significant amount of time answering customer questions about pricing and features. They may provide information to customers deciding between two different items or explain why a particular device is a better fit for a particular customer's needs. Electronic sales associates also answer customers' questions about promotions and stock availability.

Maintain Stock and Inventory Records

Responsible for monitoring and recording inventory and stock levels, electronic sales associates periodically check inventory, comparing it to expected levels, taking note of discrepancies or missing stock. They also monitor the sales floor to ensure that items are well stocked and correctly priced.

Process Returns and Exchanges

In addition to selling electronic equipment and devices, electronic sales associates also process returns and exchanges, inspecting returned items for signs of damage as they process returns via cash or credit card. Additionally, electronic sales associates enter returns in the store's point-of-sale (POS) system and return items to inventory or to shelves.

Upsell Value-added Items

Along with selling electronic devices, many electronic sales associates also support sales goals by promoting value-added items such as extended warranties and device insurance. They present customers with information regarding replacement costs and insurance coverage, usually during the checkout process.

Assist with Moving and Packing Items

Electronic sales associates frequently assist customers and other store personnel with transporting heavy items, such as big-screen televisions or desktop computers, helping customers bring heavy items to their vehicles. They might need to operate a dolly and lift to move stock from a warehouse or storeroom to the sales floor.

Electronic Sales Associate Skills and Qualifications

Electronic sales associates are retail specialists, delivering excellent customer service while maintaining a high level of knowledge about products and devices. Companies typically hire candidates with at least a high school diploma and the following skills:

  • Direct sales - to successfully guide customers to items they're looking for and up-sell other products
  • Customer service - to complete sales, resolve issues with returns or exchanges, and ensure that store visitors have a positive experience
  • Cash management - to handle customer transactions and balance cash drawers
  • Inventory control - for stock and inventory management
  • Communication skills - to interact with customers and other team members

Electronic Sales Associate Lead Education and Training

Electronic sales associates typically have at least a high school diploma or GED, although it is not uncommon for individuals to start working while still attending school. There are many opportunities for on-the-job-training as sales associates improve their communication and sales skills. Additionally, many companies look for electronic sales associates who are familiar with a wide range of technologies.

Electronic Sales Associate Salary and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) groups electronic sales associates with other retail sales positions. The median annual salary for retail sales workers was $22,900 per year, or $11.00 per hour, as of May 2016. This position is frequently paid minimum wage, so pay can vary from state-to-state.

The BLS expects employment to grow at a slower-than-average rate between 2016 and 2026, with a two percent increase in jobs.
