Hospital Registrar Job Description

Hospital registrars register patients who come into a hospital for any type of treatment. Hospitals hire registrars to work full time during all shifts, including overnight and on weekends. Hospital registrars primarily report to the registrar supervisor or desk manager and work in a team environment alongside desk clerks and other registrars. Hospital registrars perform their duties within the hospital itself and do not travel in the normal course of their workday.

 

Hospital Registrar Duties and Responsibilities

The duties performed by hospital registrars vary based on the number of patients coming into the hospital, the number of departments within the hospital, and how many other staff members are working at the admissions desk. However, these core job tasks are regularly performed in all hospital environments:

Obtain Information from Patients

Hospital registrars ask patients questions to obtain information about their state of health, insurance, and other vital data necessary for hospital registration. This includes obtaining signatures from patients on hospital forms.

Maintain Confidentiality

Hospital registrars observe and maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws at all times.

Perform Various Clerical Duties

Hospital registrars make copies, file patient records, answer phones, and perform other general clerical duties. Other common administrative tasks include entering patient data into digital systems, managing multiline switchboards, routing calls to patient rooms and various hospital departments, and scheduling appointments.

Stock Office Supplies

Hospital registrars stock and order office supplies as necessary to maintain inventory.

Collect Payments

Hospital registrars collect payments on insurance co-pays and out-of-pocket hospital expenses.

Verify Insurance

Hospital registrars call insurance companies or look policies up online to verify patient insurance information.

Hospital Registrar Education and Training

Hospitals require hospital registrars to have a high school diploma or equivalent. While past work history is not typically required, previous clerical or secretarial work is highly desired by many employers. Additionally, potential hospital registrars may be asked to pass data entry or computer competency tests.

Because this is an entry-level job, training is provided. While in training, hospital registrars work closely with a senior staff member at the admissions desk. The length of this training period varies by hospital but typically lasts no longer than one month.

 

Hospital Registrar Salary and Outlook

Information from PayScale shows that hospital registrars earn $13.46 per hour. Job data compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), however, shows that medical records and health information technicians earn a median income of $39,180 annually, or $18.83 per hour. Medical records and health information technicians organize health data and maintain patient records, performing similar work to hospital registrars. The BLS expects employment in this field to increase 13 percent by 2026, a rate that is faster than the national average.

Most full-time hospital registrars receive medical insurance with limited dental and vision coverage. Paid sick and vacation days are also standard benefits. Some hospitals provide additional perks to hospital registrars, such as free parking, meals, and use of gym equipment.
